I am going to be critically evaluating my project by looking at aesthetic experience and expressionism within my work. When looking at my initial idea of nature and plants it seems… nice but there is a lack of depth to the ideas and no real detail in them, however by the time I reached my final idea it became clear how I wanted to link reality and fantasy. In this changing world where we can’t leave our homes as much as we used to, it led me to the idea of creating my natural world digitally.
My research for this project has revolved around on 3D modelling and plants more than anything else as I want the main piece of my project to reflect the best of my abilities while working with what I have at home. My plant research has been carried out at home by studying my carnivorous house plants and looking at their behaviour, their movements in catching prey and their overall appearance both alive and dead.
The drawings and work I have done so far for this course have proved that I am a capable artist capable of taking inspiration from ordinary objects and transform them into impactful projects. While my project was initially lacking in content, ideas and productivity, it reflected my motivation for everything around me at the time. It reflects how my world turned from a detailed and colourful story where I could find inspiration into a dull, mundane, rinse and repeat routine which still has not changed. This year has been mentally and emotionally taxing and my minimalist style with my sketches and simple designs have allowed me to openly express how I have not been coping very well mentally this year and how my mental health has been rapidly declining.
The 3D models were initially created using 3D max 2020. However, after creating the first two plant models, the Pitcher and the flytrap, using this software was becoming time-consuming therefore I turned to Blender to import my two finished models and improve their look as blender was better for light, shading and overall end appearance. Once I had finished the models I combined m garden images and my 3D model images using procreate which eventually led to the final product.
My work progressed from minimalist sketches to simple 3D models of plants and my final piece of layering my models both normal size and exaggerated. This project end goal was to link the reality of nature and the outside world with a fantasy digital world. The work I have done has shown myself, and hopefully others, that with inner creativity, anything can become magical.
